SOME OF MY RECENT WORK

Some of My Favorite Pieces Landscapes Originals! Even More! The Family ...

LANDSCAPE QUILTS

These are some of my landscape pieces that I have completed in the past few years.  I like to start with either a plain white background and paint the sky/foreground from scratch, or else start with an amazing batik print that inspires me.  I then work in crayola wax crayon, pencil crayons, tsukineko inks, shiva paintstiks, threadplay, embellishments ... every piece is different.  I find that each piece asks for a different treatment along the way, and it is my job as the artist to listen to it as it develops.

I have been quite successful with my work and have been invited to teach this at quilt retreats in Jasper, Canada and at a workshop in Yellowknife, NWT.  Several of my pieces have sold, and all are for sale!

"Fantasy Falls at Night" received a Gold Medal at the Creative Stitches Show in April, 2007.

This one is completely different for me; done with torn strips of cotton and flannel. The edges are left raw and frayed and there is a considerable amount of threadplay on it.  It is not bound or bordered!

Pieced and Appliqued Prairie Piece

This is a large pieced and appliqued piece inspired by the work of both Gloria Loughman and Jan Krentz.  Hand painted fabrics were used in the piecing, as well as dimensional work and lots of embellishment.

Painted Falls

This piece is completely hand painted with Seta Color and folkart fabric paint. I completed it after doing painting classes in Orlando Florida this past June. As you can tell, it is hanging in the store and flanked by some other books! I'll get a better picture of it alone soon ...

Jasper Retreat, 2006

This one was done while teaching in Jasper in November of 2006.  The background is hand painted; all of the landscape is done with crayon, ink and thread.  Wool roving is needlepunched in for some added dimension.

A Tribute to Autumn

This is the base of a tree in a  new piece that I am working on.  The piece is dark, and is dedicated to autumn and leaves.  This tree is done with Shiva paintstix and a bark-textured rubbing plate.  Leaves in the piece are done with shiva work, fabric paint and actual leaves as stamps, and burned Tyvek that has been painted and inked. Again, there is lots of threadwork!

A close up of Tyvek leaves

The Tyvek leaves were added after the borders were put on, and hang over the boundaries of the quilt. They are "crinkly" and add texture plus sound to the quilt!

Tuscan Tour

This work is based on a commercial pattern by Esterita Austin.  I hand painted many of the fabrics used in it, including the background.  An oatmeal/mashed potato resist was used when making the cream colored fabric for the buildings.

Under the Silver Moon

This is a nightime piece, done on commercial Batik fabric.  Shiva painstik was used extensively, as was metallic foil and threadplay.  Art Glitter was also used as an embellishment.

Autumn in the Mountains

This piece is entirely handpainted and was done while teaching a workshop.

Russian Nights

This nighttime piece was inspired by a Russian landscape, and uses commercial Batik fabric, shiva paintstiks, wax crayon and foils.

This quilt just won Gold in the 2008 Great Canadian Quilt Challenge!
